The two-year post-graduate degree programme provides students theoretical knowledge and practical skills relating to computers, programming languages, graphics and multimedia applications, telecommunication systems, networking, and management of information systems. The students, after completing the two-year programme, are expected to attain a good background in conventional computer programming, and expertise in computers and telecommunication networks. To supplement the academic inputs, it is mandatory for all the students to undergo practical training (summer training/ project) in house or in a business/ industrial/ research organisation, at the end of II or IV semester of the programme. Students who successfully complete a total of 138 credits, from all the four semesters and summer training, are awarded the degree of M.Sc. in Informatics.
Since the students come from different disciplines, to bring them at par before starting the regular courses, a zero semester of about one-month has been introduced. During the Zero semester, students take courses in topics in which they do not have an adequate background and are exposed to laboratory and Internet. Out of various papers specified for the zero semester a minimum of two papers have to be taken by every student and depending on the background, a student may be advised to take more than two papers. Zero semester papers do not carry any credit for the purpose of classification of results. This period is also used for training students needing financial assistance to work as teaching or administrative assistants.
The candidate must have passed from the University of Delhi with any of the following degrees or have equivalent qualification from a recognised University / Institutions with at least 50% marks in aggregate Bachelors degree under 10+2+3 scheme (B.Sc./B.Sc.(H)/ ) in Physical Sciences or Chemical Sciences or Electronic Sciences or Mathematical Sciences or Computer Sciences or any combinations of subjects with at least two from these disciplines. B.E./B.Tech. degree in any discipline Students who are appearing or have appeared in the final examination of the above courses may also apply. However, the results of the qualifying examination must be submitted on or before 31st August 2013 failing which the admission will be cancelled.
The total numbers of seats (including reserved seats) for M.Sc. are 62. Reservations /Relaxation 15% of the seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates. 7.5% of the seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates. 5% of the seats are reserved for Children/Widows of the officers and men of Armed Forces including Para-military personnel killed/disabled in action. 3% of the seats are reserved for physically handicapped candidates. Relaxation to the extent of 5% marks in the minimum marks for eligibility to the entrance test and qualifying for group discussion and interview will be allowed to the above categories. for obc (non creamy layer) candidates, seats are reserved as per university norms.
There will be a written admission test for all the eligible candidates (including the students whose results are awaited). The question paper for the entrance examination will be of multiple-choice type. The question paper will have two parts and will be for a total of 3 hours duration.
Though there is no fixed syllabus for the entrance test, a broad outline of the syllabus is suggested in Appendix. A suitable number of candidates in order of merit from among the general and reserved categories who qualify the written test will be called for group discussion and interview to be held at the University of Delhi South Campus, New Delhi. No TA/DA will be paid to the candidates for appearing in the entrance test or for the group discussion/interview. The candidates will be required to produce original certificates and mark sheets at the time of interview. The candidates whose results are awaited may be provisionally allowed to appear in the interview upon giving an undertaking. The candidates who do not appear in the group discussion/interview will not be considered for admission. The final selection for admission will be based on the following criteria:
There will be separate lists of selected candidates for general and reserved categories. If the list of selected candidate includes the names of those who were provisionally allowed to appear in the group discussion and interview, they will be entitled to provisional admission, on the condition that they submit their final results before the date specified by the University.
The fee for various programme is payable at the beginning of each semester. The approximate fee per semester for the M.Sc (Informatics) Programme is Rs. 7500/- (Students with physical disabilities are exempted from payment of fees as per university norms).
